About Us
The San Fernando Valley Branch (“SFVB”) is one of eighteen branches throughout California, organized and operating under the auspices of The California Writers Club (“CWC”). We are a non-profit professional organization whose goal is to provide a friendly and inclusive environment for members to meet and network; to provide professional speakers who will aid in writing, publishing, and marketing members’ endeavors; and to provide other writing-related opportunities that will further members’ writing enjoyment and careers.
The San Fernando Valley Branch was founded in 1986 and keeps growing in stature and membership. In 2007-2008, we experienced problems when another writing club enjoined our branch unlawfully, causing confusion as to which club was and is officially associated with the CWC. Our charter was suspended by the Central Board because of an intermix of activities and finances of the clubs, which was not discovered by our SFVB until after the fact.
In May of this year, the SFVB reorganized, our charter was reinstated with full benefits by the Central Board, and we are now sailing along with a dedicated and accomplished board of directors and an enthusiastic and talented membership.
There is only one California Writers Club, and it was founded in 1909 by Jack London and his cronies. The official “Sail On” Logo is the trademark for this prestigious club.
The CWC celebrated its 100th year in 2009. We anticipate another century of fellowship and collegiality.
Our branch welcomes writers of all genres to join and celebrate with us.
We meet on the 3rd Saturdays of the month at 12:30 p.m. at St. Martin-in-the Fields Episcopal Church, Hannibal Hall, 7136 Winnetka Avenue, Canoga Park, CA 91306. Our programs begin at 12:30 p.m. with alternating months of Open Mic and Member Showcase. A short meeting ensues, followed by networking and refreshments, concluding with a presentation by a writer, publisher, agent, writing instructor or a professional from the writing-related field.
Members attend free. Guests are asked to pay a $5.00 tax-free donation to defray the cost of Speakers and refreshments.
Our branch publishes a monthly newsletter titled
The Valley Scribe, which encourages submissions from its members (see posted Newsletters and Memberships.)
We need YOU to help us grow, and YOU need us to help YOU grow as writers.
